This project aims to discuss the sustainability and authenticity of historic neighborhood. Shikumen, a distinct type of housing with hundreds years of history in Shanghai, is selected as the research object. In order to solve the historic neighborhood demolishment caused by the confliction between urban development and historical value preservation, the project proposed to establish a preservation and development model. Based on the emotional resonance effect as the catalyst of development, the commercial activities will be introduced restrictedly while part of the existing functional residential housing is preserving. A series of neighborhoods lead with cultural landscape will be redeveloped to fit the modern society needs, and also the locus of Shanghai’s collective memory.
